Big City Greens Wiki

The Greens' house, full address 5307 West Elkins Street, is the main location of Big City Greens. It is pinned between the Big Coffee Building and Elkins Apartment. Considered to be the original Greens' house, it belongs to Alice Green and her ancestors. It is where the Green family resided at following the loss of their country home and also the home of Gloria Sato after she lost her apartment, before they moved back to Smalton in Season 3B.

In "Dirt Jar", Bill bought back his old country farm after seeing it on sale. In "The Move", the Greens leave Gramma's house in Big City and returned to the country, where the following episodes after "The Move" take place.

The house is known every generation it suffers a superstition where it's threatened to be sold for a cause, and the kids have to convince the adults to not back down. In its most recent generation, it is threatened repeatedly by a major supermarket and its power-hungry CEO.

After Bill purchases back the Greens' old house in Smalton, the Greens left the house and returned there, with Gramma joining some time after, leaving Gloria as the sole resident of the house. By the time of "Long Goodbye", they returned to the house permanently. Although they still do plan to live in their country home as well.

Appearance[]

It's a rustic weather-beaten single floor farmhouse with a corrugated metal roof. The walls are made of mostly red wood, with two windows at the front.

The lot of the house contains a small garage, wind mill, chicken coop, tree and small garden. To its left is the building that contained Big Coffee prior to its closure by Chip Whistler, before being replaced with Burger Clown, and then the Gloria + Green Café. The Elkins Apartment is to its right.

The house currently holds 3 bedrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen, basement and attic.

History[]

The Green's house was built circa. 1850. The land was founded by Jerome and his son Bixby, which contains a barn built near aside the house. Years later, the barn was in a state of despair, razed, and replaced by a coffee shop.

The land was passed down from Green family generation to generation, each facing a threat to the land and the family farm, ranging from rail companies to aphids to a drought, which each of the generation's kids would manage to overcome, with the only exception being Alice's case where she sold the land to a man named Mr. Quisling; said land is now today's Big City ("Greens' Acres").

In front of the house, during Jerome and Bixby's time, was a railway that once existed was later decommissioned and replaced by a dirt road before becoming like a regular tarmac pavement street, the crop on the right has been replaced by an apartment building sometime in the 1950's. ("Family Legacy")

In the current generation, the house stands between the former Big Coffee building and the Elkins Apartment.

In "Chipwrecked"/"Chipocalypse Now", the house was almost demolished and replaced by a parking lot as part of Chip Whistler's Wholesome Foods expansion plan, thanks to the new Wholesome Foods Mega-Store being built over it and resulted in troubled production. Thanks to Cricket and Tilly not backing down, the demolition was cancelled, protecting the house's legacy once more, Chip is permanently banned from Big City, and Elkins Street returns to normal. Gloria also moves in with the family when she can no longer afford to live in her apartment.

Midway through Season 3, Bill purchases back the Greens' old house upon discovering it was never sold to anyone following the foreclosure so they leave the house and return to their old home in the country.

Rooms[]

Outside[]

Front Yard and Porch[]

The front yard and porch of the Green's house is flanked by two large patches of grass to the side. A weathered paveway path leads to the porch of the house, which is made out of wood like the rest of the house. A chicken coop stands off to the house's right side.

Occasionally, the porch would house Gramma's rocking swing ("Gramma's License", "Greens' Acres", "Gloria's Café)

Backyard[]

DingDong production in backyard

The backyard houses small farmland for Green Family Farms. In "Level Up", Bill comments on how restrictively small it's becoming for the many crops they're growing.

The backyard has been turned to many things throughout the series, such as a driving test crash course ("Gramma's License") or a full-on country-styled hoedown ("Homeshare Hoedown"). It is revealed the vanes of the windmill were actually the leftover propeller from Metrona Green's plane, the only thing remaining of it when the rest of the plane got buried under the Big Coffee building.

Garage[]

The garage is home to a variety of things, including Gramma's old car ("Gramma's License"), a box of keepsakes relating to Ernest Green ("Garage Tales"), Hiya Henry, raccoons ("Raccooned"), and may be used as a place to work ("The Gifted") or play ("Forbidden Feline").

Inside[]

Living Room[]

Final continuous shot of the living room

The living room is where the TV and couch is located. Prior to season 2, the TV was an old CRT TV; the Greens had presumably upgraded to a newer flat-screen TV. However, this is somewhat vague, as in "Super Gramma!" and other episodes following that, the Greens are shown having a CRT TV once again. Cricket tried to replace the TV with a new HD TV in "Big Deal", but upon seeing how Louis treats the customers on Thanksgiving, he decided against it.

On top of the couch is a plaque of a fish (momentarily replaced by Alice's sword, Swordy, in "Axin' Saxon").

The entirety of "Cheap Show" takes place solely inside the living room.

Kitchen[]

The kitchen is linked to the dining room. It has all things a kitchen would have. In "Animal Farm", it is trashed by Cogburn and his subjects.

Dining Room[]

The dining room consists of a large round table the Greens use to eat. Five chairs are present, enough for all four nuclear members of the Greens and a guest, though Gloria may be shown eating there after she moved in. More chairs may be present for guests. The room also serves as the laundry room with a washer and dryer along the wall.

Gramma's Room[]

This room is Alice's. The walls are particularly pale green with torn parts. It has a few picture frames, single oval mirror, boarded up window, queen size bed, two sets of dressers, TV she leaves on while asleep, a worn red recliner in which she sometimes sleeps, and a pink cat clock sitting on top of the dresser. She would set up traps such as the ones seen in "Cricket's Biscuits", to capture or ward off intruders.

Cricket and Tilly's Room[]

Cricket still swinging in the kids' room

A room Cricket and Tilly share. It appears to be an addition to the home, being a slight step down from the rest of the house and the walls having exposed framework. Cricket's side contains a hammock, shelves with various knickknacks, large snake lamp, and pillow on the floor where Phoenix sleeps. On Tilly's side is a loft bed with a desk underneath it, on which rests a mirror. Next to her bed is a dartboard and and old chest. Between the beds is the window with a red worn dresser beneath it. There is a large hole in the wall behind the dresser, which Cricket uses as a secret exit.

Bill's Room[]

Gloria's view of Bill's room

Where Bill resides. Throughout the series, minimal parts of Bill's room are shown; the most prominent depiction of it is in "'Rent Control". It includes a king-sized bed with a painting of a tractor above it, dresser with family photos on top, shelf built with cinder blocks and wood planks next to the door, and desk with a computer in the corner.

Bathroom[]

Bathroom still the way it is

As shown in "Tilly Tour", the bathroom was really messy until Cricket and Bill attempted to fix it. However, their attempts proved futile, destroying and flooding it; in a rush, they tried to fix it, but the bathroom was back to being messy again, meaning all their work was for nothing in the end.

Attic[]

"Super Gramma!" reveals the Green house has an attic.

Basement[]

First seen in "Blood Moon". As of "'Rent Control", Gloria has made the basement her temporary home until she is able to obtain the sufficient funds to move back into her apartment.

Appearances[]

The house has appeared in all episodes except:

The following episodes either take place completely at the Greens' house or mainly take place there while remaining around Elkins Street:

While the house is seen in these episodes, its interior nor backyard are never visited:

Trivia[]

  • The house being located in the city (as well as the Green family in general) is similar to the Hey Arnold! character Stinky Peterson, whose family moved to the city from their old countryside (much like the show's premise), and lives in a weathered down shack placed in the city. However, the Petersons' shack was built when the city was just all but a farmland with a few buildings located far from the area, while the Greens' house was built while Big City is all but a patch of farmland.
  • According to Chris and Shane, the shed, located at the back of the house, was modeled after the ones that they remember in their childhood.
  • The computer in Bill's room is modeled after Steve Lowtwait's old family computer.[1]
  • At a point of the age of the house, it has been renovated almost all the time, prior to its current iteration, where it wasn't renovated ever since.
  • In question, since the house was built circa. the 1850's, it may be considered as the oldest surviving building in the city, although there are a quite a few (if there's any) buildings that might par up to the same age as the house.
  • In some cases, e.g. "Tilly Tour", Gramma claims that where she used to presumably live peacefully before there were any buildings built around her house, which there were quite a few buildings that were built, looked much older than anticipated. A notable example would be the city hall building.
  • It's possible Chip's vendetta against the Greens will fail completely, given the house still exists in Cricket's imagined future. As of "Chipocalypse Now", Chip is banned from Big City, so his vendetta might have failed already.
  • The house was almost destroyed twice, in "Reckoning Ball" and "Chipocalypse Now". It's unknown if any of the Greens' ancestors faced a house demolition in the past.
  • The house holding out after so many years as the country becomes a city is similar to the Pixar movie Up when Carl Fredericksen's house was being surround by skyscrapers as the neighborhood was gone; and Alice, being like Carl, they both refuse to give up their houses.
