Cricket grabs various tools from Bill's toolbox.
"Hey, Dad! I got the tool you wanted!"
"Now, pay attention kids. Water heaters can be tricky things."
"Of course this thing is hot, so you gotta be real..."
He struggles to tighten the bolt on the water heater.
"SPEAK UP, DAD! I CAN'T HEAR YA!"
Bill's hands press on the heater...
...causing them to warm up quickly.
Bill stumbles backwards....
...and falls over on a pile of boxes.
"No, I was talkin' about..."
"Ha-ha, yup! I did gymnastics as a kid!"
"They used to call me "Backflip Bill"."
"Boy, that sure was fun..."
"This'll spice up my mornin' routine."
"How come you keep it all hidden down here?"
"Well, I...was really lookin' forward to my first big competition."
"But I ended up not competin'."
"Iiiit's not important, that stuff's all in the past."
"It was just a silly childhood dream."
"But I'll...always wonder what woulda happened if I had gone through with it."
"Maybe I coulda placed... or even won..."
Sounds pretty nice to me!
"Doesn't sound like he's moved on to me."
"Papa, if you don't follow your dreams, regrets follow you."
"Look, kids. I don't wanna say anymore about it."
"I'LL say more about it!"
"I tried to coach that boy."
"We trained for hours on end..."
"...but he just couldn't hack it as a gymnist!"
"Well, I guess that's true."
"See!? He can't even hack it in this argument!"
"♫ Do-do-do-do-do-do-do... ♫"
"You must have not been a very good coach!"
"Dad obviously loves a sport!"
"He's brimming with passion."
"Anyone could coach such a willing athlete!"
"You're just a big 'ol neighseyer."
"You can believe what you want..."
"...but your dad is un-coachable!"
"Oh, yeah?! I'll coach him and prove you wrong!"
"You'll see! MY DAD'S GONNA BE A KICKBUTT GYMNIST!!!"
The Big City Community Center.
Various athletes are doing several gymnastic activities.
"Uh...I'm not sure about this, Cricket."
"It's time to get gym-nasty."
"Maybe we should just go home."
"Well, do you or don't you wanna achieve your childhood dream?!"
The doors open to reveal...
...Bill dressed in his leotard with matching footbands.
"...can you believe this thing still fits?"
"And they say miracles don't happen anymore."
Bill stretches a part near his leg; he then releases it so his leg ripples.
"I'm just gonna take a moment to erase that from my memory."
He closes his eyes for a second before reopening them.
"Well, wouldja look at this?"
"I can't believe I'm gettin' back on the old horse..."
"...pommel horse, that is!"
"Enough with the gym jokes..."
"...let's see what you've got!"
"...stepping up to the line..."
"...ready to relive his childhood dream."
Tilly eats the stick of celery.
"Are you...you talkin' to me?"
"I'm talkin' to everyone."
He flips onto the pommel horse...
...and lands on his face.
"Maybe your Gramma's right."
"You're just a little rusty, that's natural."
"Don't even think about Gramma."
"This is about you and your childhood dream."
"Just relax and have fun."
Bill concentrates to himself.
...Bill climbs onto the pommel horse...
...and starts swinging on it almost flawlessly.
"H-hey, I'm really doin' it!"
Bill wobbles slightly as he lands.
"What a RUSH! It's all comin' back to me!!"
"...I've never seen a guy move like that!"
"Here, you gotta sign him up for this afternoon gymnastics competition."
"A gymnastics competition?!"
"Did you hear that, Dad?!"
"...what are the chances?!?!"
"Actually, we do this every week!"
"Ah-ah!! Will you hush up?!"
"I can't believe what I'm seein' here today."
"This could be the start of a comeback for ol' Backflip Bill."
Tilly is actually talking to a little gymnist girl.
"That's okay. We've gotta cut to commercial anyways."
Cricket dials someone with the Community Center phone.
"If you're sellin', I AIN'T BUYIN'!"
"Remember how you said Dad was un-coachable?"
"So come on down to the rec center and see how wrong you are!"
Cricket looks to his left.
There is a gymnast on a beam...
...who jumps off, does a leap in the air...
...and lands safely on a gym mat.
Cricket is stunned again.
"...competition's pretty good..."
Bill is struggling with the rings.
"Ha-ha...could...could someone help me?"
"If I'm gonna prove Gramma wrong..."
"...I've gotta take my coaching up a notch."
Cricket puts on a sweatband.
"No more Mr. Nice Cricket." (Note the devil horns in his hairdo.)
"C'mon, Dad! You can do better than that!"
"Heh-heh, I'll sure try!"
"I need a front row seat!!"
"Hey, Cricket! Look over here!"
Bill jumps off the trampoline...
...and proceeds to do a somersault.
He is now laughing in the air.
Distracted, Bill does not stick the landing...
...rather landing face first...
...if it wasn't for Cricket.
He looks behind at Gramma...
...who gives a thumbs down.
Cricket runs off to Bill...
...who is chuckling to himself.
"Hey! What're you doin' sittin' around!!?? Get back to it!!"
Bill does a handstand on the beam, with his arms struggling a little bit.
"Awfully pleased for such..."
Bill has fallen off and is lying on the ground.
Bill tries the monkey bars.
Now he's tied himself in his own ribbon!
"IS THAT ALL YOU GOT!!??!!"
Bill is unable to hold a single pose due to exhaustion.
He falls over once again.
"Do you think we could ease up a bit?"
"I won't settle for anything less than first place!"
"I thought we were just here to have fun!"
"Sure, we'll have LOTS of fun..."
"IF YA THINK IT'S FUN TO..."
That last word echos through Bill's head...
...making him remember a childhood memory.
Everyone's attention is caught by this.
Bill covers his mouth as he gasps.
After seeing the situation...
...he runs out of the room.
"Wait! Come back, Dad! Where ya goin'?!"
"He quit! I knew this would happen."
"I told you he couldn't hack it!"
"I was right, you were wrong!"
"That'll teach you to doubt your gramma."
"I coached Dad as hard as I could."
"It's not like I gave up on him like you did."
"Gave up on him? Is that what you think I did?"
(VO) I believed in Bill, just like you.
...day and night to try...
...and turn him into a winner.
...and my lung capacity...
...he could've won it all!
Young Alice comes to get him back up.
By quitting, right before his first big meet!
(normal) "I'm just gonna go out there and have some fun!"
"Sure, you'll have lots of fun, Billy boy."
"IF YOU THINK IT'S FUN TO LOSE!!!"
Young Alice watches as Bill runs away.
"Oh, no... what have I done?!?"
Tilly (OS): "Attention everyone..."
(on-screen) "The gymnastics competition will be startin' with the floor routine in five minutes."
"Ecu'me, are you supposed to be here?"
"That depends. Are you supposed to be standin' around lollygaggin'?"
Unable to answer that, Juan sits down silently next to her.
Cricket finds Bill by the truck, who is struggling as he tries to take his leotard off.
"Stupid...thing...come off...!!"
"Oh -- oh, uh...hey, son."
"Can we talk for a second?"
...before sitting with Cricket.
"Listen, big guy. Sorry about all the yellin' and screamin'."
"In tryin' to prove Gramma wrong, I ended up makin' the same mistake she did."
"I was never cut out to be a gymnast."
"You were oppressed by coaches..."
"...who sucked the fun outta your dream. I was a bad coach; so from now on..."
Cricket takes out the sweatband...
...and turns it into a ponytail.
"And the only thing I'm cheerin' for..."
"...is for you to have fun out there."
"Aww, that means a lot to me, Cricket."
"I think I'll give it another shot."
It is now the gymnastics competition.
...before landing on the ground.
"Ahhhh...ohmygosh...ahhh..."
"There's a lot ridin' on this for ol' Backflip Bill."
"All he's got is a heart full of hope!"
"That's so... moving, Tilly. You're really good at thi--"
"Eh, keep it professional, Juan Pablo."
On the competition floor, Bill takes a breath.
"Go Daaaad! Go Daaaad! He's my Daaaad! He's my Daaaad! He's biiiig! I love him!"
Bill puts his power ballad mix in the boombox...
...and strikes a pose in the spotlight.
He starts off by doing...
...before running down...
...which turns into a leap into the air.
Bill wobbles as he lands...
...but he then steadies himself.
"Bill sticks the landing!"
With the spotlight still centering him...
...Bill jumps into the air...
...then stretches his foot out on the ground...
...before doing a hand trick...
...and an upside down stretch.
"It all comes down to this last flip."
"If he nails it, he'll have the highest score in the competition!"
Determined, Bill prepares himself.
...before doing another handstand...
...which turns into a leap into the air.
After being curled in a ball...
...Bill strikes a pose against a sparkly background behind him.
Juan: "Magnificent!" Tilly: "Oh, my stars!"
...making him land on his front.
...the spotlight still shines, and the crowd remains silent.
"YEAH, DAD! ALL RIGHT! I BELIEVED IN YOU!"
...Bill stands up and spreads his arms wide with a smile.
"I'm sure we're all thinkin' the same thing, folks!"
"Is there even an award high enough..."
"...to honor such a stunnin' performance!?!"
"I'm real proud of you for finally followin' through on your dream, Dad."
"Even if you didn't win the gold."
"...tungsten is a much more practical medal than gold, anyway."
"Without it, we wouldn't have light bulb filaments."
"And then we wouldn't be able to think of ideas."
"Anyway, now that I've finally lived out my gymnastics dreams..."
"...I may need to retire."
Bill stops and laughs before cracking a muscle.
"Good job out there, son!"
"You've finally done me proud."
"Ah...what part didja like best?"
"STOP FISHIN' FOR COMPLEMENTS!"
"Let's go get you a milkshake."
