When thrill-seeker Cricket Green tricks his country family into taking a "road trip" in space, chaos in the cosmos ensues! Despite growing frustrations between Cricket and his dad, the two must learn to appreciate each other’s unique perspectives in order to prevent Big City from being destroyed by an asteroid!

Plot

Act I

The movie opens as a narrator talks about space, and then begins describing each member of the Green family (except Nancy). The Greens then spot this mysterious man and throw fruits and veggies at him to shoo him away. Bill then reveals that their last delivery before their vacation is locked and loaded, with Cricket loudly shouting that the Greens are going on vacation, which everyone hears. The family does various activities (such as packing, reminiscing, and getting in the car), while singing a song about how the Greens, as well as everyone else in Big City are super excited about this year’s vacay. Afterwards, Bill reveals, much to Cricket’s dismay, that they are going on the same road trip as last year. Subsequently, they arrive at BigTech, attempting to get the food to their last paying customer before the vacation. They then walk in on Gwendolyn Zapp’s presentation about her new space-grown vegetable initiative, where she will send Farmbots up to an asteroid and farm vegetables in space silos. Here, she reveals a Space Hotel as well, which the cost of is $10,000,000/night. After the presentation, Cricket encounters Remy, his best bud, who reveals they are going on vacation to the space hotel (due to them being extremely rich). Cricket tries to sneak into Remy's suitcase, but Bill stops him. A BigTech employee then tells Gwendolyn that the Farmbots are malfunctioning. Gwendolyn decides that she needs humans to farm the veggies instead of the bots. She attempts to get the Greens up for the mission, but Bill declines. However, Cricket accepts the deal in his place behind his back.

The Greens return to the car, and Cricket lies to Bill by saying that Gwendolyn is letting them use her "space simulator". When the overly complex workings of the mission shine through to Bill, he lies to him again by saying "they spared no expense." The Greens countdown to blastoff, and are launched into space, leading Bill to think that the simulation is incredibly "realistic". When the Greens get to space they begin to float, Cricket almost lets it slip that they're actually in space. The gravity is then turned back on, and Bill, nauseated, thinks the airlock is the exit. Bill goes through the airlock, which ends up sending him floating in space, making way for Colleen Voyd to save him, and to introduce herself. After Cricket reveals to Bill that they actually went to space, much to the family's dislike, Colleen shows them around the ship. Soon they get a call from Gwendolyn, who tells them how much it would cost to go back to Earth like Bill wants, forcing them to stay. Meanwhile, Nancy goes to the Gloria + Green Café, where after ordering a coffee, Nancy finds out the trouble her family is in. Gloria notices this as well, and offers to assist her, but Nancy declines Gloria's offer, and goes after them by herself.

Back on the ship, Colleen tells (or sings to) the Greens about the rules, leaving Bill very nauseated. Cricket, Tilly, and Alice are left alone while Colleen escorts Bill to freshen up. The three enter the Invention Vault, where Tilly finds a living green goop of slime she names "Cookie", a space recorder, and Alice finds a futuristic leg to replace her old one. Cricket and Gramma plot to cryogenically freeze Colleen to stop her from ruining their fun, much to Tilly's dismay. Cricket has to confront her that everything in space should be fun, but she doesn't know how she feels about it if freezing Colleen was such a bad idea to begin with as Cricket convince her that he's only doing this for Bill so Colleen won't interrupt them, then Tilly agrees and gives her blessing to him, and she can bring Cookie with her, much to Alice and Cricket's disgust.

Back on Earth however, Nancy tries to confront Gwendolyn about her family, but eventually gets thrown out. On top of that, the patch that was supposed to fix the Farmbots only made them malicious and uncontrollable.

Act II

On the ship, Cricket tries to cheer Bill up and sing a song about space and partially succeeds, until they fly right into a big trashsteroid field. Luckily, Bill steers them out, making him believe this road trip might actually be fun. They even end up at the Space Hotel and meet Remy. With that, Bill sings a brief reprise of the song and Cricket tells him he promises won't regret it.

On their return to Earth, Gloria helps Nancy in getting back into BigTech. They are discovered, but Nancy manages to save them. A BigTech employee informs Gwendolyn that they have uncovered the reason behind the Farmbots' malfunction: rather than being programmed to farm, they were programmed to cause harm. Nancy and Gloria confront Gwendolyn, who assures them that the Greens are safe. However, she only reveals that after the Greens landed on the farming asteroid, they were ambushed by the Farmbots. Nancy urges Gwendolyn to get her family out of there before the Farmbots kill them, but Gwendolyn reassures her and reaches out to Colleen for help. Unfortunately, there is no response as Colleen is still trapped in the cryochamber, unbeknownst to Gwendolyn.

Act III

They try to fly away, but one of the thrusters is clogged with trash from the trashsteroid field. Alice and Tilly release Colleen from the cryo chamber, and the Farmbots try to break into the ship. After a call from Gwendolyn, she reveals there is an escape pod on the ship. However, Colleen sends the crops in the pod, stating that completing the mission is more important. After Nancy threatens Gwendolyn and asks her why she doesn't value a life over some crops, Gwendolyn bursts into song, revealing her troublesome past. On the ship, the crew go to the cargo bay to avoid the Farmbots, finding out that there is a kill switch to shut off the Farmbots on the other side of the asteroid. The strap a rocket to the Kludge and drive, with a few mishaps on the way, including a big jump that crashes them right through the kill switch station. Gwendolyn reveals that the crash causing a chain-reaction of station explosions all over the asteroid, will send the asteroid hurtling towards Big City when the last station explodes. Cricket accidentally cuts off communications, requiring the crew to find a wire that will shut down the procedure.

Cricket and Bill once again get into another argument, with Cricket calling Bill out for his over-protectiveness and not accepting the idea of trying something new now and then while Bill calls Cricket out for putting the family in danger with his schemes and begins to tell him that his ideas are bad, leading Cricket to denounce Bill hatefully. Just as the crew finds the right wire, the last station (the one they're at) explodes, sending the family hurtling through space, and the asteroid hurtling towards Earth. Gwendolyn tries to abandon everyone to go to Mars, leaving Nancy and Gloria to save both themselves and Gwendolyn's kindergarten teacher, Ms. Kay.

Act IV

Back in space, with the crew drifted apart, Cricket calls for help with no avail, after no response, Cricket sings about his lament on his and Bill's argument. Eventually, Alice's futuristic foot floats by, with Nancy able to get a signal on it. Cricket catches the foot, with Nancy requesting ideas for saving Big City and the Earth. But Cricket tells her that he accepts Bill is right that all his ideas are bad and starts to regret his idea of going into space. Nancy is not going to accept Cricket giving up and decides to give him a pep talk right before losing the signal. She tells Cricket that while he and Bill are different, they are much more alike because they both want what's best for the family but do it differently. If they can appreciate each other's perspectives and work together they can stop the asteroid. Feeling better, Cricket uses the rocket feature on the leg to find the rest of his family and crew, soon after, Colleen finds out that Gwendolyn was going to live on Mars and leave Big City to die. Afterwards, Colleen has a mental breakdown now realizing the kind of person Gwendolyn is and fully works with the Greens, rebelling against Gwendolyn's rules. Cricket gets an idea to save Big City, so they go to the Space Hotel and enter the Tractor Beam Control Room. After a fight with the robot staff, Alice loses her leg. The tractor beam ends up malfunctioning, eventually leading to Cricket blasting himself at the tractor beam, and latching on. Cricket is guided by Colleen and activates the tractor beam, but the asteroid is moving so fast, the tractor beam barely does anything.

Colleen has an idea to power up the beam, but after having a talk with Bill, the trashsteroid field returns and Cricket can't execute the plan. It knocks Cricket nearly off the Hotel, and Bill gets an idea to save him. Bill uses Cookie to smash a window, he then uses a sign found in the trash to block Cricket from the remaining trash, giving Cricket time to flip the final power switch and pull the asteroid back from impact. The tractor beam is too strong however, and is pulling the asteroid on a collision course with the Space Hotel. Remy uses the power of conga to evacuate everyone to their designated escape pods without causing commotion. Colleen says her goodbye to the Greens, and Tilly gives Cookie to take with her. The Greens then escape the Space Hotel themselves, just as the asteroid hits the station. Gwendolyn watches as her Space Hotel blows up, much to her dismay. The Greens start thinking (and singing) about their next vacation plans as they fly back home, and the movie cuts to credits.

Epilogue

The credits roll as we see what happened after the events of the movie, with Gwendolyn getting vegetables thrown at her by an angry mob, for abandoning the city in its time of need, Colleen, and Voyd-sternauts are cleaning up the trashsteroid field, Nancy and Gloria drive Ms. Kay back to the retirement home, Alice getting a new leg, and Tilly reminiscing about their memories with her (still kept) space recorder. The movie ends with the Greens having fun as they notice the guy who keep narrating their lives stalking them, thus shooing him away.
