"Big Resolution" is the 43rd episode of Season 2 and the 101st episode overall of Big City Greens.
Synopsis[]
Cricket wants to help fulfill a New Year's resolution of Gloria's, which is to ask out her crush.
Plot[]
It's New Year's Eve in Big City, and the Greens and Gloria are writing down their New Year's resolutions while watching Times Circle and the eventual drop of the cube on TV (and Tilly is even counting down the seconds). Bill's resolution is to "Stay the course", much to Nancy and Gramma's chagrin, as Nancy says the best way is to challenge himself and get out of his comfort zone. Gramma demonstrates by doing a skateboarding trick.
Cricket's resolution is to help Gloria with her resolution, taking into consideration it was his fault Big Coffee got shut down and they lost their jobs. To his confusion, her resolution is to ask out Kevin, the boy she had been crushing on since the beginning. She hadn't spoken yet because of a potential worst case scenario where he coldly rejects her. Cricket understands her problem, and since he had the same thing until he got a girlfriend in Gabriella (with Tilly carrying a photo as proof), he has become a relationship expert and promises to help her. Gloria is too nervous and flees to the basement where she cocoons herself.
Cricket and Tilly meet up with Gloria, where she reveals Kevin is in Times Circle and it'll be impossible to get there. To help her feel less nervous, Cricket and Tilly decide to role play and set up a practice date with Saxon in the role of Kevin. Unfortunately, Gloria's attempts are less than perfect, and with about less than an hour until midnight, it's time to go to Times Circle. Feeling a bit brave, Gloria finally decides to go.
Meanwhile, Bill is in the kitchen trying to get out of his comfort zone by eating a turkey and white sandwich with mayo; Nancy rejects that and suggests he try something exciting. She recalls a time from her childhood where she and her friends take on the "penguin plunge", where they jump in the Big City river in nothing but swimsuits at the stroke of midnight. After some convincing, Bill decides to reluctantly join them.
The kids and Gloria reach Times Circle where Maria Media is reporting, but with so much of a crowd, it's almost impossible to find Kevin. Cricket suggests they climb to the top of the Times Circle Cube where they can get a better view and spot him from there, much to Gloria's fear. Meanwhile, Gramma and Nancy are preparing for the penguin plunge, but Bill chickens out and decides to go wait in the truck while they do it without him.
While climbing up the cube, Gloria gets scared and almost chickens out herself, but with some encouragement from Cricket (and the fact that it's too scary to go back down), she regains hope and continues. The three reach the top and spot Kevin, but their weight causes the cube to drop several minutes early, something the crowd is not happy about. Cricket suggests they sneak off so no one knows, but it's too late. To make matters worse, Gloria ends up dangling from the cube and is called "the girl who ruined New Year's".
Gloria and Bill meet up together at the truck and talk out their respective problems; at the same time, they realize they should do something about it and it's better than just missing things. Realizing there's still time left, Gloria heads back to the square while Bill hurries to rejoin Nancy and Gramma. At the same time, the cube has been reset and drops for real this time, as Maria leads everyone in the midnight countdown. Gloria rushes back just in time and at the stroke of midnight, she finally reaches Kevin while Nancy and Gramma take on the penguin plunge with Bill joining them.
Kevin recognizes Gloria from earlier, and she finally works up her confidence and confesses her love; however, he quietly turns her down, due to not feeling anything at the moment. Nancy and Gramma manage to get out of the water, but wind up freezing cold as well. Bill helps out by giving them towels and leg warmers, and reveals his resolution is to break out of his comfort zone instead of acting like a lunatic.
Back in Times Circle, Cricket and Tilly hear of Gloria's rejection and try to play it cool so they don't disappoint her. However, she doesn't mind; even though the worst case scenario did happen, it wasn't as bad as she thought it would, and if she can do something like that, then there's nothing she can't do this year. She then launches into a round of excited bravery, and Tilly ends by counting down the seconds to next year.
