"Level Up" is the 16th episode of Season 2 and the 74th episode overall of Big City Greens.
Synopsis[]
Bill gets addicted to a farm-simulating video game.
Plot[]
Bill and Tilly are in the backyard trying to farm their crops when they realize that, due to the oppressive environment of Big City, it has become nearly impossible to grow any fertile produce. Surrounded by the steel monoliths of their industrialized urban landscape, they feel trapped in a wrought iron cage that limits how far they can develop or expand. This realization disappoints Bill.
Remy arrives to give Cricket his old console, the Bintendo Twist Minus (as opposed to the newer model, the Bintendo Twist Plus), and shows off the latest video games. Bill feels slightly bothered by the new gaming machine until Cricket and Remy reveal a game designed for someone like Bill called Simulated Farm: Ultra Dull Edition. Bill is amazed by the game’s presentation and eagerly takes control to play, while the boys rush back to Remy's house to play the newer model.
Bill ends up spending an excessive amount of time playing the game, staying up well into the evening and continuing straight into the next day. Cricket notices that Bill hasn't slept (his avatar has), which makes him worry. Gramma Alice points out that the crops are withering away because Bill isn’t tending to them. The rest of the Greens decide to try to snap Bill out of his gaming obsession by leading him to activities he typically enjoys, but all their efforts fail. Bill refuses to get up, finding Simulated Farm to be his ideal way of living, and he praises it for the minor achievements he earns from completing various farm tasks. When Alice threatens to destroy the game, Bill locks himself in his room to continue playing.
Concerned, Cricket calls Remy for help, bringing along his Bintendo Twist Plus so that all four of them can enter the game and rescue Bill. Cricket, Remy, Tilly, and Alice create avatars in the game and proceed to make a mess of Bill's farm, with him desperately trying to maintain order. Eventually, Tilly unlocks a tornado power that wreaks havoc on the farm.
Finally, Bill removes himself from the game, but he’s still feeling down. He tells Cricket that ever since they lost the farm, he has felt stuck in life. The Greens come together to devise a plan to help him.
The next day, Cricket takes Bill up to the roof of Big Coffee and reveals that Ms. Cho has allowed them to create a garden on the rooftop so they can grow more crops, as long as they give Big Coffee a bit of the proceeds from the planter beds. The arrangement includes splitting the proceeds. Bill thanks his family and receives an "achievement" from Tilly.
