"Mages & Mazes" is the 45th episode of Season 2 and the 103rd episode overall of Big City Greens.
Synopsis[]
When the kids play a role-playing game at Remy’s, his rules lead to conflict.
Plot[]
Cricket, Tilly, and Kiki come to Remy's house for something. Cricket wonders what he has for them, and Kiki wonders the same thing when a raven sent her a letter that reads, "Arrive at nightfall with naught but your adventuring spirit." Vasquez opens the door and they go into a game-like lair, where Remy appears and reveals he has invited them to play Mages & Mazes, a fantasy role-playing game where the players control the adventure together. Cricket and Tilly get confused, having never played the game before, while Kiki knows she has been playing. Remy sets up the game, as his friends started making their own heroes; Cricket names his hero "Bufflegs McSwole," describing him as being able to beat anyone by kicking them in the shins, Kiki names her hero "Diamondbow the Dazzler," describing her as being able to shoot down an army of flying apes with one arrow, and Tilly names her hero "Shmaltho," describing him as an all-powerful mage who chooses to only turn himself into a cat.
Remy starts the game in a village (Big Village), and Cricket interrupts, suggesting that they can smack little rocks. Remy reminds him that people roll the dice to get a number, and Cricket gets a two but two isn't enough power to kick the pebble very far. Remy, wanting his friends to play well to get on track, tells them that a retired warrior is sitting by a campfire. Kiki gets a twenty which means she can talk to him. The warrior tells them that there is a treasure guarded by a dragon and Cricket suggests to go see the dragon, so they immediately skip ahead.
Remy, as a dead skeleton, explains that they should go back to the start because the retired warrior wasn't done talking. When back at the start, the warrior continues talking, telling them that they're going to go into the mystical forest. Cricket, along with the others, goes back to the cave where they continue after a short journey. Inside the cave, they run into booby traps that someone set up; Cricket gets trapped by a bucket of bees and Kiki and Tilly have fallen into a pit. After getting trapped, they discover a mud monster they need to fight, then they need to jump across a pit of spikes. Tilly turns into a cat and attempts to jump across, but rolls just short of the necessary number to make it across and instead she falls. They then run into a door that requires two keys to unlock, of which they only have one.
After complaining about the difficulty, Remy skips ahead and they enter a cavern full of treasures, only to notice Remy's character, a dragon named Remulox the Mighty, who asks the heroes to solve a riddle in order to proceed. However, Cricket is tired of the rules, and decides to act on his own, with the others following suite. Remy becomes disappointed that they aren't playing right as Vasquez carries him to his room.
With the freedom now afforded them without the rules, they fight an army of lizardmen, and Kiki makes the lizard king disappear and takes his throne. Afterward they realize that Remy had much more planned out over numerous play sessions and begin to feel bad and guilty for not listening to Remy. They go to his room, using the dice to pretend-play their way to him, and after pretending they defeated Vasquez, enter, envisioned as their characters, which surprises him. Cricket, through the illusion of Bufflegs, apologize to Remy for what they did and it's better if they have their Mage Master with them, and Remy decides to go back to play the game.
Once again facing Remulox the Mighty, they all solve the riddle and defeat the dragon as Remy intended, then get the gem, deciding to smash it, as Remy exclaims that the adventure continues. In the end, Tilly, as Shmaltho, breaks the fourth wall to say that's the end.
