"Quiet Please" is the 38th episode of Season 2 and the 96th episode overall of Big City Greens.
Synopsis[]
When the Greens visit the library to teach Cricket about reading, the strict librarian threatens to throw them out if they make any sound.
Plot[]
Cricket is watching TV while Tilly is reading a book, when Bill recommends Cricket to read a book instead of slacking off watching TV. However, Cricket isn't willing to read as it requires him to focus, something he finds hard to do because he has an overly-stimulative brain. Gramma tells him that books are for everyone; he just has to find the right one for him. Cricket is now convinced and is ready to get a book.
The Greens go to the Big City Library to get Cricket a book. When Bill notices Cricket is bringing toys, he reveals he needs them to stay put, for if he isn't engaged and his brain isn't constantly stimulated, he'll go off. Nevertheless, Bill has the utmost confidence in him and promises they won't let that happen. As Tilly and Gramma declare they're ready to help Cricket, he is busy engaging himself with a small ping-pong racket. Inside, Bill warns everyone to keep quiet, as the library is a "quiet place" and due to the librarians being so strict they take their jobs far too seriously, they don't want to get on their bad side. Cricket is now nervous, as being quiet is the hardest thing he had ever done.
As the family searches for books, Bill notices Cricket has turned on a toy that makes very loud sounds; he is able to turn it off in time, but a streak of blue tackles him; this is the very strict librarian, obviously the leader of them all, who tells him to stay quiet due to her rather experienced hearing. Gramma's hearing aid then acts up, causing the librarian to slither up to her like a snake to give the others a single warning: another sound, and they're banned permanently; even whispering isn't allowed. The others are at a loss on what to do, when Tilly spots a couple using American Sign Language to talk with each other; Tilly picks it up easily and teaches it to her family. It is only a matter of seconds before they are able to speak basic sentences using ASL whenever they need to say something, with anyone other than Tilly just using charades or pantomime due to not being as experienced as she is.
Gramma and Tilly has gotten a stack of books for Cricket to read, but he is either turned off by the length of the content of the books. Now bored, he makes an elderly lady laugh, which is picked up by the librarian. Cricket tries to tell her to stop, but to no avail. Bill takes Cricket to the water fountain to drown out their voices, where Cricket discusses his dislike of Tilly and Gramma's books due to his lack of focus, so Bill suggests the next genre Cricket will read; this takes them upstairs. Cricket come across a shelf with movies, but Bill takes him away. As they go upstairs, a Blego brick falls out of Cricket's backpack.
Upstairs, the Greens are now at a kids' section, where Bill presents Cricket with his favorite book series, The Adventures of Lil' Abe. However, Cricket has a hard time trying to get into it too. Now bored, Cricket imagines a dog under the wheel of a cruise ship that is about to hit an iceberg. Seeing Cricket apparently getting into the first book though being bored, Bill gets more. Cricket wants to go down to get a movie, but his conscience doesn't want him to. However, Cricket defies his conscience and goes downstairs; however, he steps on a Blego block, making him shriek in pain, alerting everyone else and the librarian.
Cricket has to hide from the librarian, using stealth to get to the nearby restroom. Its doors squeak, alerting the librarian to his position. After a very close call where the librarian almost catches him, she is alerted to a different sound, Gramma wrinkling a candy bar. The librarian runs at her on all fours, but Gramma manages to distract her by cranking her hearing aids up.
Bill and Tilly has arrived to the restroom, where Cricket admits he can't read Bill's genre either. Bill reassures Cricket that even though he failed to get into any of the books he read today, he can always go back to the library another time. Cricket admits defeat and they are about to get Gramma, but Cricket steps on the Blego brick he dropped earlier. He shrieks again, prompting Tilly to pick up the block and silently call him out, but this also alerts the librarian, who summons a host of other librarians who quickly surround the Greens. These librarians are soundly thwarted by Gramma's hearing aid, but they recover relatively quick. They are now in pursuit of the Greens; at another aisle, Cricket accidentally bumps into it, making a book drop; it is a comic book, which Cricket quickly gets into, but completely forgets he's supposed to be quiet and starts laughing loudly, causing the main librarian to hear and close in on him without him even noticing one bit. Bill sees this and tries to warn Cricket, but because his back was turned, he doesn't respond. With his son about to lose the gift of reading forever without even knowing, as a last resort, Bill signs he loves his son and willingly sacrifices himself by shouting loudly, which saves his son just in time and gets him attacked by the other librarians behind the oblivious Cricket, and is subsequently thrown out.
Outside, the kids and Gramma catch up with Bill, who reveals he has been banned from all the libraries around the world, but is nonetheless happy of Cricket, who has finally found a book that's his interest and is given the gift of reading. Cricket points out now that they're back outside the library, they can make noise again, and they all scream happily.
In the final scene, it is then revealed that all of the episode is apparently one big book named Big City Greens: Quiet Please, a book being read by the librarian, who then shushes the viewer.
