Season 1 Season 2 Season 3 Season 4 Season 5 Movie Full List

Season 3 is the third season of Big City Greens[2]. It premiered on October 9, 2021[3] with the double-length special, "Squashed", followed by an official premiere on February 12, 2022,[4] and ended on March 25, 2023, with the double-length special, "Long Goodbye".

Overview

Unlike the previous two seasons, Season 3 consists of 20 half-hour episodes instead of 30, and the same content the last two seasons had, including music, guest stars and special episodes. Like the second season, episodes are produced in groups and released all at once every several months are so; however, the production is reduced to groups of 4-6 episodes at a time, splitting the quadrants of the season into two parts each.

On June 9, 2021, it was announced Season 3 will air some time in the Fall of 2021, along with the Season 3 premiere of Amphibia and the series premiere of The Ghost and Molly McGee.[5] Considering both were scheduled for early October 2021[6][7], Season 3 was said to premiere in this time frame, confirmed as the 9th[3].

Season 3 premiered October 9, 2021 with the Halloween special "Squashed!", while the season officially premiered on February 12, 2022 alongside The Ghost and Molly McGee with "Boss Life" and "Papaganda".

The first batch (episodes 1-5 released on March 16, 2022)[8], the second batch (episodes 6-9 released on July 27, 2022)[9], the third batch (episodes 10-13 released on October 13, 2022)[10], the fourth batch (episodes 14-16 released silently during an unknown time period), and the fifth batches (episodes 17-20 released on April 19, 2023)[11] of season 3 were made available to watch on Disney+.

The second half of the season shifted its main focus to the Greens' old hometown in the country, Smalton, which was foreshadowed in "Dirt Jar" and continued into "The Move". The poster for Season 3 gave a hint toward this.

Production

Production of Season 3 began in April 2020, during the short hiatus between the Season 2 episodes "Animal Farm" and "Desserted". The COVID-19 pandemic, which shut down major businesses including animation, forced the crew to move to working from home.

As of September 22, 2021, "Squashed!" was the first of Season 3 to be finished and the only one completed by that time, with all other episodes currently unfinished.[12] This makes said episode an "unofficial" premiere.

Originally, this season consisted of 30 half-hour episodes, but it was later confirmed by Shane Houghton that season 3 would only carry 20 half-hour episodes due to focusing production on the movie.[13] After "Trivia Night"/"Big Trouble", there was another hiatus so that Amphibia, The Owl House, and The Ghost and Molly McGee could finish airing their final episodes, and so the crew could work on the upcoming movie at the same time as well as various future related projects.

The season resumed airing on July 16, 2022 with "DependaBill"/"The Delivernator" due to The Ghost and Molly McGee airing its Season 1 finale the week before. However, there were fewer new episodes than normal as the ninth episode, "Rembo"/"Dirt Jar" served as the season's midseason finale roughly two weeks later on July 30. The Houghton Brothers also confirmed on their social media accounts the midseason finale would be a huge story-driven episode which would promise nothing will be the same anymore after it airs.

On September 24, 2022, "The Move" premiered, marking a new setting for the remainder of the series and the Greens resettling into the country. New episodes would premiere throughout October, up to "Pizza Deliverance/Horse Girl" on October 29. It can be believed that the former serves as an unofficial Halloween special, due to its nature and the time it aired. However, this could be coincidental.

No new episodes premiered in November, but after this period of time, "Virtually Christmas" premiered on December 3, 2022 as a Christmas special. The episode was originally produced and planned to be aired in 2021, following "Squashed!". However, it was delayed to the next year due to technical issues with its 3D animation.

Finally, the season concluded in March 2023, with "Pen Pals/Study Abroad" airing March 4, 2023, and "Long Goodbye" ending the season on March 25, 2023. Additionally, the finale ended on a cliffhanger, which continued into a Season 4 episode.

Shorts

In addition to new episodes, new short-form series and episodes may be planned.

A sequel to Shortsgiving, titled Big City Greens: Shortstober, aired on October 30, 2021.

Other

Disney's Magic Bake-Off aired a Big City Greens-themed episode on October 15, 2021.

Trivia

  • This is the first season:
    • To not be announced prior to the previous season's premiere date.
    • To be worked at home remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • Of an animated Disney show that was not announced before a predecessor season's airdate since the second season announcement of Milo Murphy's Law in 2017.
    • To open with a double-length episode and the first to end with a double-length episode as well.
    • To shift its focus to another location for part of it.
    • To not feature Ms. Cho since her introduction.
    • To end on a cliffhanger.
    • To never show Cricket in his underwear.
    • Where Cogburn appears in more than one episode.
    • To have more than two double-length episodes (one for the premiere, one marking the mid-season, one for the Christmas special, and one for the finale).
    • To not have any episodes named after Cricket, Tilly, or Gramma.
    • To have more than one Halloween episode (if "Pizza Deliverance" is counted).
    • To not feature Gloria on the season's poster art.
    • To not feature Mr. Whistler since his introduction.
    • Where Remy appears in an entire batch of episodes (in this case, he appeared in the entirety of Season 3B due to his extended stay at the country farm).
    • To air a Halloween episode and a Christmas episode in the same season.
    • To begin airing only five episodes at a time across some months instead of ten at a time, likely due to the crew increasing in production. Because of this, seasonal halves now begin airing in five-episode increments (ie. Season 3A part 1, Season 3A part 2).
  • This season continues where the previous season finale left off, where the Greens and Gloria are preparing to open their new café.
  • This is the second season to begin in the Fall after Season 2.
A crazy, buck-wild gremlin

This scene was used for the trailer.

  • The official trailer uses an edited shot of Cricket from "Little Buddy" from when he was apologizing to Chase, having his dialogue redubbed at least seven times and his mouth was reanimated to lip sync with the new lines, and he is looking at the viewer instead of Chase.
  • This is the only season:
    • To date to be fewer episodes shorter than its predecessor; the episode order was shortened from 30 to 20 so that the crew could start working on multiple Big City Greens projects, such as the movie.[14]
      • This also confirmed by Chris Houghton that there’s a lot more Big City Greens coming in your way.
    • To not feature the Big City Mall nor Hudkins Department Store.
    • With no major antagonist, despite Chip's return at the end of "Long Goodbye".
    • Where Admiral Mustard does not appear.
    • Where Gregly and Gabriella speak in only one episode.
  • Multiple other shows have also had specific seasons shortened due to other productions:
    • The third season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was cut down to 13 episodes instead of 26, due to most of the crew working on the movie, My Little Pony: Equestria Girls.
    • Season 9 of SpongeBob SquarePants was split into two parts while Season 10 was only 11 episodes, so the crew could focus on production of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
    • Season 4 of Liv and Maddie was cut down to 15 episodes instead of 20, due to Dove Cameron filming Descendants 2.
    • Season 4 of Hannah Montana was shortened to 13 episodes due to production on Hannah Montana: The Movie.
    • The final season of The Owl House was demoted to three simple hour-long specials, because of the show being cancelled due to network backlash for its nature not "fitting the Disney brand".
    • Thomas and Friends had only 20 episodes for seasons 12-16 instead of the usual 26; Season 21 in particular was shortened to 18 due to the transition to the Big World! Big Adventures! rebrand.
  • This is the second season to feature an episode which completely changes up the status quo.
  • The second half of the season is similar to the third seasons of other Disney animated shows which transition to the protagonist's original hometown in their respective third seasons:
  • This season was originally planned as the final season of the show.
