"The Gifted" is the 21st episode of Season 2 and the 79th episode overall of Big City Greens.
Synopsis[]
Tilly and Cricket battle to see if Bill lies about liking their Father's Day gifts.
Plot[]
Tilly is making a sculpture out of popsicle sticks as Cricket comes in, asking her if she has seen his slingshot. He is surprised by the sculpture, who she dubs "Potato Papa", which she'll give to Bill as a Father's Day gift. For his present, Cricket makes some "Cricket Cupon" (Cricket coupons) on the spot, which would entitle the bearer to free actions from him, e.g. free hugs, less whining from him, and painting the entire house.
Tilly tells Cricket the coupons aren't real gifts, at least in her heart. She tells him she's an "Expert on giving great gifts", telling him her gifts must show she truly cares for her Papa, as she takes time and effort to make these; the effort is why Bill loves them. However, Cricket tells her that Bill loves it because he loves every gift, even the ones that take mere seconds to make (e.g. the Cricket coupons). However, Tilly tells him there is no way he'll gift the cheap gifts this time around. As she says he isn't as adorable as he used to be, Cricket displays a cute face and confides that Bill will like his gift as equally as Tilly's.
Bill is watching a nature documentary, and is terrified by a spider that is shown. Gramma watches this; Gramma is determined to make Bill's Father's Day a blast, deciding to give him a card. Back at the house, Cricket and Tilly gives Bill their gifts. Bill likes Tilly's gift, much to her happiness, and much to Cricket's surprise, his too. However, Tilly is in shock. As Bill takes Tilly's gift to display, Tilly tells Cricket that Bill may be lying about liking Cricket's gift, and challenges him to a gifting showdown.
As Bill is working on the farm outside, Cricket and Tilly present him with another gift, which is supposedly a sweater. which they have made using kitchen towels (hence the dirtiness), sweatbands and string. Asking him for their opinion, Bill likes it too. Tilly wins this round, revealing she deliberately made Bill a terrible gift and thus revealing Bill is indeed lying about Cricket's gift. Now desperate for answers, Tilly decides to turn to something Bill hates...
Back at Wholesome Foods, Alice struggles to find a card suitable for Bill, as three employees, amongst them Greg and Rose, look on, shortly after in fear as Alice yells for cards "that don't stink." She manages to find a Barry Cuda-themed card. Remembering her previous experiences with the character, she rips the Barry Cuda head off the card. Alice finally finds one that is "good enough," not looking at it as she goes.
As Bill works on an engine, the kids call his attention to another gift, this one making Bill scream; they have given him spiders. Due to his arachnophobia, he declares he does hate the gift, which is revealed to be from Cricket. It is also revealed he was lying about the bad gifts all this time. Tilly boasts she was right, but as Bill mentions her gift, she is deeply shocked and decides to call it a day.
As Cricket boasts that he was right and indeed smarter than Tilly, he discovers her on the floor, having been partly driven to insanity and having colored her dress black. She declares that Cricket was right: she's the worst gift-giver in the world. She recalls the previous times Bill actually lied about her gifts - a Jug Mug, a turkey jerky necktie, two Boot vases, a jelly bean frog, and corn-cobbed rim glasses - when he says he loves them. Realizing the gifts are still out there, she runs out to get them. Cricket quips that she'll be "just fine."
Tilly retrieves the gifts while Bill watches another nature documentary and Alice returns, card in hand. It turns out she got a sympathy card, though she chooses to modify it; it now reads "Dear son, yer a good dad. I'm proud of u." Bill loves this gift; as he hugs Alice, her back is heard cracking, though she says her body is okay - it actually came from outside, which is Tilly destroying all the gifts. As she is about to destroy the Potato Papa, she instead hits her real Papa by accident, though he "barely feels it".
He reveals he truly liked her presents, whether they're crummy or not, whether he understands them or not. He tells her gifting isn't a competition; it's all about sharing ideas, together. Happy, Tilly hugs her Papa and is offered to make more Tilly Gifts; she decides to continue production of them. It also turns out Bill has a stash of Cricket Coupons he's saved up for years, and wants to use them. Cricket utters an "Uh oh," presumably because he has to do all the things written on the coupons.
